Classes Description

Preschool Engineering Club

This club is a perfect mixture of fun and learning for our youngest engineers and will cycle through 4 modules that will include but not be limited to;

LEGO®- Using Duplo® bricks and other manipulatives, students use the engineering design process to complete engineering challenges while exploring concepts such as alike/different, patterns, weight, height, tunnels, bridges, and more.

Computer Programming - Children will be led in activities that start laying the foundation of computer programming; we will utilize Scratch Jr and Robot Turtles.

Creative Engineering Builds and Fun Science Experiments - students will get hands on experience building structures and mixing safe and fun chemicals to explore the physical world

Each lesson is 30 minutes beginning with a read-along or interactive game to introduce the concept and grab the children’s attention. From there students are guided through scaffolded activities resulting in individual and cooperative engineering challenges

K-2nd Engineering and Tech Club (5-7 year olds)

In our Junior Engineering and Technology Club for K-2nd grade (or 5-7 year olds), students will explore four units during the 31 weeks of classes. In each unit students will use the Engineering Design Process to design and create different engineering projects.

Units: Scratch Computer Programming, LEGO Robotics, Makey-Makey and Creative Engineering Builds and Cool Science Experiments.

What’s more fun that playing an interactive video game? Writing one! Children will be introduced to the concept of computer programming by writing fun lines of code with Scratch Jr. In this Scratch program, students work together to create their own games, art, and musical instruments while exploring coding foundations.

During the Makey-Makey portion of instruction children will expand their computer programming and even computer hardware engineering knowledge to make their own input devices. Hey, why not use a banana as a space bar!

During our Creative Engineering Builds and Cool Science Experiments, your kids will get their hands dirty! They start building and mixing and constructing their way to fun! We will get to build fun structures like windmills and test whose bridge is the strongest.

This class is a perfect mixture of fun and learning, using LEGO® WeDo™ Robots. Using LEGO® bricks, students build a dancing bird, a smart spinner, a drumming monkey, and more. They also learn how to program and operate their creations using a laptop computer.

3rd-5th Engineering and Tech Club (8-12 year olds)

In our Engineering & Technology Club for 3rd-5th grade (or 8-12 year olds), students will explore four technology units during the 32 weeks of classes. In each unit students will use the Engineering Design Process to design and create different engineering projects.

Units: MinecraftEDU, Crime Scene Investigators, Video Game Design, EV3 MINDSTORM LEGO Robotics

What’s more fun that playing a video game? Writing one! We are moving into the big time here in the 3rd-5th grade club. We will teach the students how to design, test and improve their own racing video game utilizing Microsoft KODU. Vroom Vroom!

Wait, what? Minecraft? Well, not quite exactly. Shhh, don’t tell your kids but we’re teaching them how to solve real word engineering problems in a virtual world. But why? Think NASA Mission Control… how do they repair the various rovers racing around moons and Mars? Just like we will in this class, except their world is real.

In Crime Scene Investigators, we will teach the children how the good guys put the bad guys away. Fingerprints, DNA sequencing, and vehicle crash investigations are just some of the topics we will touch on to ignite your child’s imagination of being one of the good guys!

6th-8th Engineering and Tech Club (11-14 year old)

In our Engineering & Technology Club for 6th-8th grade, students will explore four technology units during the 31 weeks of classes. In each unit students will use the Engineering Design Process to design and create different engineering projects.

Units: Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy, Crime Scene Investigators, Video Game Design, EV3 MINDSTORM LEGO Robotics

This class is a perfect mixture of fun and learning, using LEGO® EV3 MINDSTORM™ Robots. Using LEGO® bricks, students build various challenging designs and how to program and operate their creations using a laptop computer. And then, … why not battle each other!

What’s better than learning robotics? Why learning it from a curriculum developed by the leading robotics department in the U.S., Carnegie Mellon! We have partnered with them to offer this advanced robotics class to push our students and give them a taste of the programming language used by competitive robotics teams in the top high schools and college in the country.
