Sara Butler and Dara Dawson

Sara Butler

Sara Butler

Sara Butler is a 20 year veteran teacher and has worked with students from pre-school through eighth grade. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with an emphasis in Middle School Mathematics. In the last five years, she has held several positions at an independent school in Virginia. She has been in the middle school classroom, acted as the math department chairperson, and served for two years as the Middle School Curriculum Coordinator. Prior to working in Virginia, she spent six years as a co-director and teacher in a charter middle school in Connecticut. Sara believes in teaching through inquiry and investigation to allow students the opportunity to make lasting discoveries on their own. She is devoted to inspiring children to be active learners who are consistently asking “why” and “how” as they learn. In the last two years, Sara has worked with colleagues and local engineers to create STEM based lessons for her middle school students. Sara is excited to be part of the Engineering for Kids team as a co-owner and lead teacher!

Dara Dawson

Dara Dawson has a strong dedication to education both in and out of the classroom. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Middle School Mathematics and a Masters of Science Degree in Geosciences. Dara has taught math and science to middle school students for nearly 20 years. She has also been the Dean of Students, a Science Department Coordinator, and a sponsor for student travel through the Global Explorers Program. She has worked with Dr. Robert Ballard in the Black Sea searching for ships of antiquity using underwater robots. Dr. Ballard is known for his ocean exploration and discovery of the Titanic. Dara firmly believes students learn best when given the opportunity to design their own solutions and apply them to real world situations. She brings a passion for learning to her students and creates enthusiasm and possibilities in STEM areas. Engineering for Kids is a wonderful fit for Dara to help students experience the design process and inspire them to explore their environment.
